The Westford Academy freshman football team traveled to a rain soaked George Simonian Alumni Stadium in Chelmsford on Saturday to take on a tough Lions squad. Chelmsford scored first and held a 6-0 lead until quarterback CJ Hammond connected with star wide receiver Carter Hess on a 35 yard fade route and the touchdown. The Ghost missed on their PAT attempt. Both squads played solid defense for the remainder of the half as they entered the break with a 6-6 tie. Chelmsford again scored first to open up the second half, but the defensive line, consisting of Malcome Mcdonald, Jared Crome, Richard Martirosyan, and Muhammand Khokhar, stuffed the Chelmsford quarterback on the conversion attempt. Led by stud running back Declan Hevey, the Ghosts fought into the red zone multiple times without any results. As time ticked down in the fourth quarter, Hammond rolled to his right, tucked the football, made multiple defenders miss and plunged into the endzone tying the game at 12. He followed that up by running over two defenders for the two point play as the freshman Ghosts took down the Lions for a 14-12 victory. “We’re proud of the team win,” Head Freshman Coach Al Duffett said. “Despite the injuries and the weather, they came up with big plays when they needed it. On to LS.” WA freshman football takes on Lincoln Sudbury this coming Wednesday at 5:30pm, at the Trustees Field, under the lights.
