Preseason Notebook: Week 1

WESTFORD, Mass- Westford Academy football opened up its 2023 fall camp at their new practice site, the Boneyard. Close to 100 players reported to camp. The Ghosts August schedule features 16 practices and 3 scrimmages spread out of 22 days. WA's preseason leads into the season opener against Lowell High School at Trustee Field on Sept. 8.

Top 3 Practice Songs: Patiently Waiting (50 Cent, Eminem), The Hum ( Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike), Dior (Pop Smoke).

Offensive Highlights: The WA offense brings back all-conference quarterback Jake Cullen and multiple impact players; Jr Alex Wilson WR, Sr Shane Clark OL, Sr Chris Czado O/L and Jr Jesse Moran Fullback. However, all state running back, Anthony Rudiman is gone after two productive seasons, as are a couple veteran playmakers at the receiver position and some big offensive linemen. Juniors Evan Pasters, Quinn Reynolds and Ryan Kyle all had breakout summers in 7v7 and hope to add value at the receiver position.

Defensive Highlights: Coach G's defense hopes to find guys to replace the production of the two time tackle leader Drew Wilson '23. Senior cornerback, Nick Russo has had a tremendous camp so far. Other players that have stood out on the defensive side of the ball are Sr DE Jack Nelken, Sr DL Henry Babineau and So LB Jhavian Rivera.

Notes: The freshman class has over 40 players. Coach Duffett stated that this might be the most talented freshman class he has ever seen. "There is not much experience in this class, but the bigs are bigger than any class we have had and we have so much athletic ability at the skill position."

The Ghosts have added three new coaches to its staff this year. Hall of Fame Coach Bruce Rich Sr will be working with the running backs. Coach Connor Mclaughlin (Chelmsford High School/ Becker College Grad, Mill City Eagles OC) will have some big shoes to fill as he takes over the offensive line from former Coach, Joe Sullivan. Coaching the QBs is Coach Henry Morris (Bentley College QB 2005-2009). "Coach Morris worked at our QB Academy this spring and did a great job developing Quarterbacks of all ages. His attention to detail is impressive, we are excited and lucky to have added him to our staff." - Coach Bruce Rich Jr.

The Ghosts will have 3 more full padded practices, before they take on Lexington and Groton Dunstable in a tri-scrimmage on Saturday 8/26.
