Westford Academy Football Team: Preseason Check In

From intense scrimmages to early morning practices, the Westford Academy Football Team has diligently prepared for the upcoming season. Throughout the summer, the WA Football Ghosts participated in various seven-on-seven scrimmages, which allowed them to fine-tune their skills. Senior Captain and Quarterback Alex Wilson highlighted the benefits of these sessions, stating, “(The scrimmages) let’s us work off a lot of the rust we have just from over the summer (...) they help us with more mental than physical mistakes.” With a demanding practice and game schedule, the team has sharpened both their skills and their game-day mindset. Their first in-season match is set for Friday, September 13th, at Lowell High School, kicking off at 6:00 pm. The Ghosts are driven by high aspirations for the season, with Wilson emphasizing their approach: “We like to say that we don’t win games on Fridays; we win them on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.” The senior players, from the Class of 2025, are eager to achieve a successful season, with Wilson noting, “This is the moment we have been working towards.”

Over the summer, the Westford Academy Football Team has focused intensively on both strength and conditioning, alongside honing their technical skills. The players have dedicated significant time to rigorous weight training and conditioning drills, aimed at enhancing their physical endurance and power. This comprehensive approach to fitness has been crucial in building the athletes' resilience and agility on the field. By complementing their technique work with a robust strength and conditioning regimen, the team has ensured that they are not only skilled but also physically prepared to meet the demands of the upcoming season. This dual focus on athleticism and technique is expected to give the Ghosts a competitive edge as they face their opponents.

As the new football season approaches, the anticipation within the Westford Academy Football Team is palpable. With their rigorous preparation behind them, the players are focused on translating their hard work into success on the field. The team is determined to build on their summer scrimmages and make a strong impression in their first game. The blend of seasoned senior leadership and promising underclassmen creates a dynamic mix of experience and enthusiasm. Coaches and players alike are optimistic about the potential for a standout season, driven by their commitment to continuous improvement and a shared goal of excellence. The upcoming season represents not just a chance for victory but an opportunity to showcase the resilience and teamwork that have defined their preparation.

Comments about scrimmage against Haverhill on August 30th from Head Coach Bruce Rich:

“Our scrimmage with Haverhill is a good dress rehearsal for the real thing.  We play one half of real football.  We do all of the special teams and wear game jerseys.  I thought we played well.  The offensive line was dominant again.  Owen Kenefic, JJ Wilson, Chris Chaisson, Ben Durgin, Connor Knoettner and TE Chris Butts could be the best group we have had around here in a long time.  Alex Wilson did a good job leading the offense.  He had 2 rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown in 15 minutes of football.  Ben Chen ran the ball well.  He had 75 yards rushing on 6 carries. Ryan Kyles speed was an issue for Haverhill, he had 2 catches for 78 yards.

On defense we rotated in a lot of players.  Our Sophomores are really stepping up for us.  Guys like Declan Hevey, Brett Moran, JJ Wilson and Malcom Mcdonald will all contribute in big ways  for us on Friday nights. Quinn Reynold’s probably had the play of the game with a highlight interception on our sideline.

Haverhill 1st half Offensive Stats:

Passing: Alex Wilson- 5 for 7, 160 yards, 1 TD

Rushing: Alex Wilson- 96 yards, 2 TDs/ Ben Chen- 75 yards, 1 TD

Receiving: Ryan Kyle- 2 rec, 78 yards, 1TD/ Quinn Reynolds- 1 rec, 29 yards
